About the Process

Mondul Coffee Estate is a sustainably managed farm located on the slopes of Mount Monduli in Tanzania. Established in 1931 by the Davico family, originating from Italy and bringing coffee seeds from Ethiopia, the Mondul Coffee Estate has a rich history. Some of our fields still nurture the original root stock from the early 1930s. In 2007, a group of shareholders took ownership of the estate, leading the company to adopt a policy that blends traditional methods with modern practices.

The estate spans over 511 hectares with over 266 hectares dedicated to growing high-quality arabica beans at elevations of 1600 to 1800 MASL. At Mondul Coffee Estate, fully washed coffee undergoes a meticulous process. Skilled pickers harvest ripe cherries, which are sorted and pulped within hours, with a mid-wash at 18 hours, followed by a full washing. The washed beans are slow dried for 21 days in sunlight and conditioning ensures high-quality beans. Also other processing methods such as honey, natural and carbonic are offered here. The Estate works with 100 permanent employees and approx. 850 casual workers during peak harvest.

The estate is committed to empowering its staff and improving their livelihoods through impactful social projects. This includes providing staff with dairy cows and constructing barns for their own dairy operations, benefiting both the staff and the estate through the utilization of cow manure as organic fertilizer. Mondul Estate also supports beekeeping to preserve biodiversity, enhance pollination in coffee fields, and promote sustainable practices. Additionally, communal farms and vegetable gardens are facilitated, enabling staff to cultivate their own crops and achieve self-sufficiency. These initiatives reflect Mondul’s dedication to holistic empowerment, sustainability, and community development.
