As our first Ecuador coffee, we find it a one of a kind. This Natural Typica Mejorado baddy is Juan Pena certified, an absolute legend in coffee producing, winning various coffee awards year after year at his farm in Yunguilla. If a wild curiosity and yearning for something complex sounds like something that describes you than this coffee won’t disappoint.

Roast Profile

We offer three roast styles: espresso roast and our regular filter roast.

Our filter roast is designed for clarity and character but is also highly soluble, making it a great choice for espresso if you’re into more expressive extractions.

If you prefer more classic, rounded espresso profiles, go for our espresso-specific roasts. They’re designed for higher solubility and a deeper, fuller cup.

However when we test the espresso roast and love it as filter, and cannot see the improvements in having a seperate filter roast we call it omni.

Additional Info

Yunguilla Valley is home to communities with deep indigenous roots, particularly the Cañari people, who were the original inhabitants of the region before the Incas arrived. Many traditions, including ancestral farming techniques and spiritual beliefs, still influence daily life. However, the valley has also experienced significant mestizo influence, creating a cultural fusion seen in its food, festivals, and ways of life.

an is a multigeneration farmer, but he’s relatively new to coffee: A former long-stem-rose producer, he started experimenting with coffee plants in about 2010, after disastrous weather wiped out his flower fields.

Turning his energy entirely to coffee, he has worked to develop as healthy, hardy, and horticulturally intentional a farm as possible, with a very well-nurtured plant nursery and a “garden of inputs” on the property. The “inputs garden” is interesting and shows Juan’s dedication to science and methodical experimentation: He has coffee trees planted several yards apart and labeled with the fertilizer inputs they’re given, to track the impact of the nutrients on growth and cherry development.

Juan grows several varieties on this land, and is actively engaged with processing experiments as well. His farming is meticulous, scientific, curious, and giving: He provides neighbors and farm workers space in his nursery, along with seedlings, so that they can develop plots of their own.
